Gastronomy
The gastronomy of Agaete is especially distinguished by its fresh fish, where the following stand out: fish broth, fresh fish grill, Las Viejas, grilled sardines and Paella Marinera. There is a great variety of restaurants throughout the municipality that offer this seafood cuisine and especially in Puerto de las Nieves you can taste these typical dishes of the place.
Agaete is perhaps the only place in Spain and Europe where coffee cultivation has a certain importance, together with orange trees, papaya trees, mangoes, guavas. Throughout the Agaete Valley, coffee is generally planted on the edges of the farms, together with other tropical fruit crops; production is still scarce at the moment, so it is left for family consumption.
Throughout the history of coffee in Agaete, as D. José Antonio García Álamo tells us, “the cultivation of coffee must have been rooted throughout the 19th century. The mild and uniform temperature throughout the year, the abundance of water and the fertile volcanic soil offer the best conditions to make Agaete coffee “The best on the Island”, as Verneau says.”
The only data available on the variety cultivated are the analyses carried out in the seventies by the Brazilian Coffee Institute, which classifies it as “of great quality, caracolillo variety, Paraná type, with a high caffeine content”.
Regarding the organoleptic characteristics, it is worth noting the conclusions issued by D. Albert Solá I Trill, who, after travelling the world studying and tasting different coffees, highlighted the following about Agaete Coffee: “It is of great quality. It has a good greenish yellow colour. It smells of green fruit. When roasted, it develops and swells well. The resulting drink has a fruity and sweet taste reminiscent of chocolate or liquorice. It is slightly acidic. It has an acceptable body”.
Currently, the Association for the Development and Promotion of Agriculture of Agaete (Agroagaete) together with the City Council and other collaborating entities such as AIDER and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, have set themselves the general objective of the Valorization and Promotion of Coffee cultivation in the Municipality of Agaete, through a process focused on the management of its quality and competitiveness, and thus achieve better and greater production that will allow its commercialization in the not too distant future.
